The Truest Act of Loving Kindness: Understanding Jewish Practices for Preparing the Dead

Every act on behalf of the dead is an act of chesed shel emes, true lovingkindness. Such lovingkindness is given practical expression by the Hevra Kadisha or Holy Society. The Hevra Kadisha tends to the various needs related to death and mourning. A panel from the independent Community Hevra Kadisha will discuss their experiences and answer questions.


Rhoda Ben-Gai

Rhoda Ben-Gai lives in her hometown, Newton. As a member of Temple Shalom, she chairs the Hesed Caring Community.

Sherry Grossman

SHERRY GROSSMAN has lived in Jamaica Plain for 43 years and is a founding member of Nehar Shalom where she found out about the Community Hevra Kadisha. She has been part of 9 Taharot teams.

Rick Kline

Rick Kline is a graduate of the Hebrew College Rabbinic School and works as a Chaplain Intern at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He currently teaches an eight session course called “Preparing For The End Of Life” based on his final year project while a rabbinical student.

Melinda Strauss lives in Framingham, attends the Nehar Shalom Community Synagogue and has been an active member of the Community Hevra Kadisha. She has facilitated many discussions about Jewish burial practices.
